American halal recipes

These are the breakfasts, sandwiches and bowls of the American diner and deli, cooked with halal meat and no pork, and often built for protein. They are the plainest recipes we have: eggs, oats, cottage cheese, chicken and beef, put together quickly with little special shopping.

Breakfast is where most of them live. There are banana oat protein pancakes and cottage cheese pancakes made in a blender, a steak and egg breakfast burrito, an egg white and spinach scramble, protein French toast with banana and peanut butter, and a sweet potato and egg hash that works well at suhoor. Toast comes topped with sardines and avocado or with smoked salmon and a poached egg.

For lunch there is a chicken Caesar-style wrap with a yogurt dressing, a Cobb-style bowl with chicken, egg and avocado, and an egg salad sandwich made on cottage cheese instead of mayonnaise. The fifteen-minute beef smash rice bowl takes the flavours of a burger and puts them over rice. Snacks are simple: cottage cheese with dates and walnuts, or apple slices with a peanut and date dip.
